The prostate is a small gland found only in men, located between the penis and bladder. Enlargement of prostate is called BPH (benign Prostatic Enlargement). Common in men above the age of 50. It is common condition associated with ageing in men. Enlargement of prostate can place pressure on the bladder and urethra, the tube through which urine passes. This can cause urinary trouble in men.
These men do not have increased risk of prostate cancer. The exact cause of enlargement is not known but attributed to hormonal changes due to aging. These symptoms can range from mild to severe.
You can asses your severity by filling up questioner called International prostate symptoms score (IPSS Score). The questioner is available at the website (www.chennaiurology.com). Higher the score, severe is the symptoms. Mild symptoms (up to score 7) can be observed. Moderate symptoms (8 to 18) score needs medication. Severe (score more than 18) cases may need surgery to avoid complications.
